Mama Rita, aka Rita Messina, has a love affair with her former home, New Orleans, and with Louisiana music, Zydeco in particular. So when she decided to strike out on her own as a booking agent in the Great Northwest, incorporating her talisman, the fleur de lis, into her business card design was a fait accompli. The challenge, then, was to create an image both unique and robust enough to hint at the generous, rich and lovely character Rita brings to bear. Once I found an appropriately interesting fleur de lis, experiments led me to blend it with portions of a wonderfully rusted sign, which helped lend dimension and intrigue. Pairing it with Albrecht type and Adobe Wood Type ornaments for bullets completed the Big Easy picture.
